Biographical / Historical

Henry Steinegger (1831-1917) was born in Neunkirk, Schaffhausen, Switzerland to Barbara Steinegger and John Jacob Steineggger. At 14, Steinegger moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania with his parents. In Philadelphia, Henry spent four-years as a lithographer apprentice. In 1851, Steinegger traveled to San Francisco, California and worked in the mines near Nevada City, California. After numerous failed employments, Henry moved back to San Francisco and started the city's first lithographic firm, Britton, Ray and Co. with Joseph Britton and a Mr. Ray. Steinegger always carried around a sketchbook, featured in this collection, with early San Francisco scenes. Henry Steinegger died in 1917 in Fruitvale, California.

Dr. Etta Lund was born in 1879 in San Francisco to Henry Steinegger and Henrietta Widmer. Dr. Etta Lund attended Cooper Medical College and graduated in 1903. Lund got married in 1904 and she practiced medicine in Glenn County. She continued her practice until 1956, when she retired but still continued with medicine. In 1956, Lund served as a City Health Officer and medical consultant to the Public Assistance Program. Henry Steinegger is Dr. Etta Lund’s father and he was born in 1831 in Switzerland. Steinegger was an artist and according to Etta herself, he always carried around a sketchbook. Steinegger was also San Francisco’s first lithographer and even did engravings for President Garfield’s funeral. Acquisition TypeGift
