Biographical / Historical

George Maderos (1933-2017) was an athlete, coach, and educator in Chico, California. A native Chicoan, Maderos excelled at football, basketball, track and field, and boxing at Chico State, earning 14 varsity letters, before the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers drafted him in 1955. After two years playing professional football, Maderos returned to Chico State where he was a professor in the Athletic Department for 38 years and coached football, boxing, track, and golf. In 1969, Maderos was awarded Chico State football’s “Player of the Century,” and in 1973 he was inducted into the Chico Sports Hall of Fame. In 1970, Maderos was elected a trustee of the Chico Area Recreation and Parks District, and in 1974 he was elected its director. In 1955, George married Cindy Keim, and the couple had two children, Matt and Clint. George and Cindy divorced in 1977, and in 1994, George married Debbie Peloyan, a Chico State alumnus and member of Chico Sports Hall of Fame for golf and Chico State Athletics Hall of Fame for swimming and softball.
