 Collection
Identifier: UAC -007

Content Description

The collection covers 1982- 2017; with the bulk of materials created between 2000- 2017. The materials document the administrative and event planning activities of GSEC, illustrating their funding structure while the organization operated under the governance of CSUC Associated Students enterprise. GSEC operations were run by student employees, paid as interns by Associated Students. During the early 2000s GSEC interns were tasked with creating "legacy binders" to illuminate their organizing efforts to incoming interns. These binder contents make up the bulk of the Event Planning series (Boxes 3-6).

Biographical/ Historical Note

The collection spans 35 years of activism for women's rights at the CSUC campus. Established in 1971 as the Women's Center, GSEC's initial mission was to operate as a student-organized empowerment organization to support women in higher education, administered by Associated Students at CSUC. In 2011, the Women's Center expanded in an effort to further promote the human rights and equal representation of marginalized students on Chico State's campus, transforming the organization to the Gender and Sexuality Equity Center (GSEC). During this time GSEC established three programs to accomplish their goals: the Women's Program, the Queer Program, and the Trans program. All programs apply Intersectional Feminist theory to their organizing efforts. The Women's Program centers diverse women's experiences, offering educational opportunities and programming to promote the personal, education, and professional growth of all women. The Queer Program centers LGBTQ+ people, seeking to cultivate community for people affected by heterosexism, promoting accessible affirming and empowering space for sexually and romantically diverse people. The Trans Program centers transgender and gender diverse people, challenging institutional and interpersonal oppression perpetuated by cissexism and transphobia, aiming to foster accessibility, community building, and empowerment for the transgender students. GSEC staff brought these materials to the University Archives when the student- activist organization was shifted from the Associated Students to the Multicultural and Gender Studies Department in spring 2018. As a result of that transition, GSEC changed the organization’s title to the Gender and Sexuality Equity Coalition.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three series: Administrative, Event Planning, and Audiovisual. The Administrative materials (Box 1- 2) include budgets, CSUC grant paperwork, staffing position descriptions, potential collaborators both on campus and off-campus, potential speakers for educational events, other feminist organizations' operational guidelines, and general office manual information; these materials are organized in reverse chronological order. The Event Planning materials (Boxes 3-6) are documents gathered by GSEC interns in their event planning coordinating efforts. All other document materials are organized chronologically. The Audiovisual materials are organized according to format (Box 7 is cassette tapes, Box 8 are VHS and 8mm videocassette tapes, Box 9 is CDs and DVDs), and organized chronologically within the box. Some oversized materials (promotional event materials: posters and flyers) are shelved separately in flat map cases.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials were donated by the GSEC Director of 2018, Rachel Ward. The GSEC Director position is a paid student internship position, awarded annually.
