The campus organizations documented in this collection are: the Dream Center, Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Gamma Zeta Alpha, Gender and Sexuality Equity Center (GSEC), Safe Place, Sigma Tau Delta (STD), Students for Quality Education (SQE), and Upward Bound (UB). Students in the English 130 Rhetorical Analysis course gathered these primary source materials together to analyze community rhetorics and compositional approach. With the exception of Gamma Zeta Alpha, the students were not affiliated with the organizations they documented and analyzed.

The Dream Center, established in 2016, serves to support Chico State campus members who are undocumented or come from mixed-status families, and provides financial aid information, health and wellness assistance and academic guidance, as well as training, tools, and advocacy on issues regarding immigration.

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), established in 1968, to facilitate access to higher education for underrepresented, low-income, first-generation college students who have experienced economic, educational, and environmental barriers but display the potential to succeed.

Gamma Zeta Alpha, established in 1987, is the first Latino Fraternity on the west coast, serves as a vehicle for promoting success in higher education, highlighting academic achievements, and the professional development of Latino men enrolled at Chico State University.

The Gender and Sexuality Equity Center was established as an extension of the Women’s Center, a project of Associated Students of CSU Chico. The AS Women’s Center, formed in 1971, has its roots in the women’s movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. GSEC’s 2011 expansion sought to challenge societal norms that oppress and marginalize women, transgender community members, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and intersex (LGBTQ+) community members, by providing opportunities for leadership, personal development, and referral services. GSEC offers a safe and inclusive space where the campus and community can effectively support the academic mission of the university. In 2018, the Center became a program of the Multicultural and Gender Studies Department, and the changed its name to the Gender and Sexuality Equity Coalition.

Initially funded through a grant from the Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women, Safe Place was established in 2009. The grant ended in 2012 and Safe Place was institutionalized asis a CSU Chico support and advocacy program for survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking, utilizing the methods of crisis intervention, prevention education, resources and referrals. Safe Place services are confidential and available to students, staff, and faculty of CSU Chico.

Sigma Tau Delta is the CSU, Chico chapter of the international English honor society established in 1924 organized to help members prepare for careers after college, working to benefit campus and community, and create a close-knit group of like-minded students interested in strengthening connections with their department. The CSU Chico chapter, established in 2009, accepts members who have declared a minor or major in English and have taken two English classes beyond English 130. Student for Quality Education (SQE) was formed in 2007-2008 by students in the California State University (CSU) system to build the student movement for educational rights in public higher education. With 17 chapters active on the 23 CSU campuses, the CSU Chico SQE chapter is active in organizing around opposing tuition and fee increases through direct action. Notably, the Chico SQE chapter is not affiliated with the campus Student Life and Leadership office, and operates as an “unrecognized” student organization.

Upward Bound was established as part of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, funded at CSU, Chico in 1966 to serve 50 high school students. Established as a year-round program for motivated students with academic potential who who are low-income, first-generation college students, and want to pursue higher education. Upward Bound is funded through the the longest running grant on the CSU, Chico campus.
